Self-Portrait Revamped
Programs: Processing, Adobe Illustrator
Time Spent: 1 week
Completed: September 22, 2022
I first took Processing during the spring of 2022, but unfortunately I was unable to complete the course. Programming proved to be a bigger challenge than I could handle at the time, so I retook it during the fall. Once again, the professor challenged us to code an abstract self-portrait, and once again I found myself inspired by the vaporwave aesthetic. However, this time, I wanted to take my project a step further, so I decided to be inspired by low-poly character designs.
I retrieved this color scheme from Adobe Color. I decided that, unlike last time, I should use a unified Vaporwave color scheme for my portrait.
These are my three sketches that I created by tracing over three different photos of me. I decided to go with the third design/photo because the sketched polygons looked the most clean and because they best defined the 3-D shape of my face.
Here are my in-progress images from my color render in Adobe Illustrator. After I finished tracing my selfie in triangles and polygons, I realized how blank the background looked, so I decided to give myself a sort of crescent moon halo. I chose to use a slightly dimmer version of the teal color from the Adobe Color scheme, which makes the crescent look like a neon light.
A screenshot from my code in progress. I saved each iteration by specifying the last part of the portrait that I completed.
Here is my final portrait in Processing! I thoroughly enjoyed creating this project, and I am very happy with how much I've improved in my coding and artistic skills.
(Here is a comparison between my original self-portrait and the revamped version.)
