Lost in a Dream: UI Design
Program: Photoshop
Time Spent: 4 weeks
Date Completed: May 28, 2022
For the final part of my project in the Digital Design Aesthetics course, my challenge was to create four user interface screens for my speculative game, Lost in a Dream.
First, I researched the UI designs some of my favorite games, such as The Sims 4 and TES V: Skyrim. User interfaces need to easy to use, accessible, and they need to match the mood and visual style of the game itself.
For this project, I wanted the user interface to reflect the emotional qualities of my game’s concept: magic, mystery, and loneliness. I also wanted to use a minimalist style to reflect the stark, monochromatic environment of the game. I used a cursive font called Sheila for the titles of each screen because of the mystery and elegance in the font’s personality, and I typed the text in white to make it appear to glow to match.
In order to differentiate the white text from the background, I added extra layers of color. For block of text, I used a layer of violet using the multiply opacity mode and a gray rectangle on top of that layer set to 53% opacity. The only exception is the text for the game’s title, which only uses the violet layer, without the rectangle. The violet emphasizes the sense of magic and mystery while also obscuring the details of the background image, and the semi-transparent gray rectangles provide a neutral, minimalist backdrop for the text.
I also created a simple icon to indicate which blocks of text have been selected. I created this icon by using the letter V from the Sheila font and repeating it four times in a circle so that the icon would maintain visual unity with the rest of the screen. I also added a soft white glow behind the icon to unify it with the white, glowing elements present throughout the screens.
