This charcoal drawing was an exercise in atmospheric and linear perspective for my Drawing 101 class. After sketching different locations around the house, I chose to draw the staircase leading to the attic because I felt that it was my best option for combining both kinds of perspective. I wanted there to be a dramatic contrast between the light and shadow, so I turned off all the lights at the bottom of the stairs, leaving only the light at the top and the light in the kitchen behind me to illuminate the scene (and my drawing board!).
